In My Peer-Reviewed Opinion…

[Checking email? Put it down–it’s ok!]

I promise. It can wait. If you don’t believe me, see my last post, http://www.sunnyspicylovefest.com/email-can-wait/

Really. We spend most of the day and nearly all our spare moments plugged into our devices. Every time we face a moment where we aren’t sure what to do next, what do we do? We pull out our phones. I do this, too, and I have to ask: Are our lives really that boring?

Nah, at least I don’t think they are. They are filled with color, action, fun, and yes, the occasional soul-quashing drama, but boring? No, never. Maybe you feel your job is boring, but there have to be at least a few periods of time where the unexpected happens. If not, perhaps you need to initiate it!

I wanted to follow up on the last post by offering a few words on the theme that our devices and electronic overlords can definitely wait, and that we could all use a period of time without their intrusion into our lives. This could be five minutes, or maybe five weeks. What matters is our taking the decision to unplug for a little while, then following through with it.

This doesn’t have to mean a vacation. I know Cindy and I just got back from Tahiti, but you don’t have to hop on a plane and fly halfway across the ocean to enjoy the benefits of unplugging. And what are those, exactly?

For starters, you will have more time. Seriously–the time you would ordinarily spend plugged in you can devote to other things. You can start a load of laundry. You can cook. You can go for a walk or hit the gym. You could make more love. You could take down an entire bottle of wine and settle in for a nap, whatever.

Personally, I think it feels good to do this on occasion, because I find I need it (yes, that includes the wine.) Maybe you feel the same. Just a few hours seems to restore me. Now, imagine if you were to do this for several days. How much more relaxed would you feel? How much more rhythmic, more alive?

Breaks are good for people, that’s all I’m saying, so if you think about it, take one. If you need scientific proof of this, you can find it online; I’m sure somebody has commissioned a study. The conclusion is: if you visit the tropics for a vacation, you will have more sex. You will be healthier, and possibly more tan. Such is my peer-reviewed, scientific opinion. Peace. The end.

You know it’s true: places like the beach in Moorea, pictured here, make you feel more alive.
